Creating a Healthy Habitat: Room Temperature Guidelines

living room with the thermostat

Several factors, including location, season, and personal preferences, determine the ideal temperature for your home. Typically, the healthiest temperature range for your home is 68 to 72 degrees Fahrenheit. Most people find this range comfortable, and it can help prevent health issues such as dehydration, heat exhaustion, and hypothermia.

Moreover, the optimal temperature for each room in your house varies. Take the bedroom, for example: it should be cooler than the rest of the house, between 60 and 67 degrees Fahrenheit. This range supports better sleep and can reduce the risk of health problems related to sleep. These tips will help keep you and your loved ones comfortable and healthy all year long.

Adjust Home Temperatures as Needed

Lots of people find that a temperature range between 68 and 76 degrees Fahrenheit works perfectly. Still, the optimal temperature may change from person to person or room to room.

For instance, the World Health Organization (WHO) recommends about 64 degrees Fahrenheit for a healthy, fully dressed adult. This temperature is also seen as ideal for sleeping. But they actually encourage disabled, elderly, or young people to stay in rooms at 68 degrees Fahrenheit or warmer to avoid health risks. Regardless, if you or a household member has allergies or respiratory issues, the room temperature should ideally stay above 61 degrees Fahrenheit. Lower temperatures can cause breathing problems, especially for those with asthma or allergies.

Optimal Temperature by Room

Adjust the temperature in particular rooms for optimal health and comfort based on where you spend most of your time. Aim for the following temperatures:

  • Living Room: For optimal health, keeping the living room between 68 and 72 degrees Fahrenheit is often recommended. Temperatures that are too low can make you feel cold and uneasy, while temperatures that are too high can cause overheating and dehydration.
  • Bedroom: Keeping your bedroom comfortable and healthy for sleep matters, since you spend a lot of time there at night. To accomplish this, set the temperature between 60-67 degrees Fahrenheit. This range helps regulate your body temperature overnight and prevents sweating or shivering.
  • Kitchen: Because cooking and baking increase activity in the kitchen, it should be cooler than the rest of the house. A good temperature range for the kitchen is 60-64 degrees Fahrenheit. This range keeps you comfortable while you’re there and can help certain foods last longer.
  • Bathroom: Prevent mold and mildew by keeping the bathroom cooler than the other rooms in your rental home. The low 70s is a good target. This range can help discourage fungi from growing and eliminate musty smells.

Always be mindful of any signs of ill health your body might show. Feeling overly hot or cold could indicate that you need to change the temperature. Likewise, if you notice symptoms such as headaches, fatigue, or dry skin, the temperature may not be optimal for your health.

Ensure your rental home has adequate insulation to prevent heat loss during winter. Also, keep your home cool in summer by using curtains or blinds to block sunlight. A programmable thermostat can automatically set the temperature based on your schedule and preferences.
